Splashes of Hope was founded in 1996 by Heather Buggée through her own real life experiences. Heather was attending art school at the time, and she spent time with a close friend who was bedridden in a local hospital, suffering from Hodgkin's disease. They spoke about how they planned to change the hospital surroundings, and make the institution a place that was more conducive to the healing process.
When her friend died, Heather decided that she would put their plans into action.
At first, Heather was uncertain of the response she might get from the hospitals to painting murals on their walls and ceilings. As it turned out,
a few began to show an interest, and scenic ceiling tiles became a popular request.
Ceiling tiles can be used in a number of different areas of the hospital, and interchanged. A child having a particularly difficult time, could have a tile added to his or her room to create, or change, a visual stimuli.
Heather's first mural project was at Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla.
Upon hearing positive feedback from staff, patients and family members, Heather created Splashes of Hope.
Today, Splashes of Hope has over 40 volunteers including 15 artists. Additionally, we have an Executive Board and Advisory Board, which are made up of dedicated business leaders and professionals. It is the firm support of our entire organization which has helped Splashes of Hope to grow and blossom into an international organization, receiving mural requests from facilities throughout the United States and the world.
